CREATING FOR CHANGE
2020 THE YEAR THAT WAS
|
|
Evolving from New years Resolutions to New Years "Intent" While 2020 was heading to be a ridiculously good looking year for us, our whole world came to a standstill. While many friends, families, businesses and economies were broken apart, we somehow remarkably managed to survive and continue to create for change. From the start of the pandemic, every confirmed job or project came to a grinding halt, so what does one do when you are forced to stop work? Well, we went back to the drawing board, pondered how we could reach out and connect with the world, how we could support each other during these trying times and boy did we do some cool stuff.
One thing we have learned is that creative, cinematic independent documentaries have always served a unique function in our storytelling culture and democratic discourse, sitting somewhere between entertainment and journalism, from stories bubbling from the ground up—within communities and movements. "Resolutions" are so yesterday, INTENT is our word for 2021. We intend to make a difference, We intend to create for change. In a country that must now begin the work of coming together to shape a just, equitable future, they will play a critical democratic function. As we look for the leaders, strategists, thinkers, and artists who will imagine and lead the way forward—out of 2020 and beyond
We travelled in excess of over 17 000 km in 2020 across South Africa and Zimbabwean capturing and creating content for change! Keep reading as we showcase so rad things we did during 2020🏻

We collaborated on an Epic song with Doctors on the frontlines!

This song was inspired by Prof Lungile Pepeta and negative publicity that Dora Nginza and Livingstone Hospital experienced during the Covid 19 pandemic.

This song was inspired by Prof Lungile Pepeta and negative publicity that Dora Nginza and Livingstone Hospital experienced during the Covid 19 pandemic.
The concept was received with great enthusiasm by our tremendous team of clinicians. Primarily driven by the ICU team, we involved our surgeons, emergency physicians and so many more world class Healthcare professionals who are the ‘masked face’ of late nights and hard work. Most have never been in a recording studio, let alone sing on an original song they’ve never heard before.
These great hero’s rose to the occasion and gave it their best. “We were so unified through this process and trust that the world gets to see a little beyond the anxiety of the Covid19 pandemic with our song. Thank you to Tecmed, South Africa for their support with the filming.

Annually we join a bunch of crazy old bats, who cycled ridiculously long distances, to far off places across Africa, raising funds and awareness for the pensioners of Zimbabwe. While we were set to Cycle 3000km from Harare to Namibia Via the Okavango Delta, Rona had very different plans for us locking down the crew in different countries. . Thus leaving the Zimbabwean contingent to cycle 3000 km around Zimbabwe, and the South African contingent, 2500 km from Durban to Lamberts Bay over the top of Lesotho through the Free State, Eastern Cape and across no less than 40 Mountain Passes along the way.
It was most certainly one of the toughest tours to due with all the rules and regulations around the pandemic, We managed to pull off two remarkable tours raising of US$170 000 for the pensioners in Zimbabwe and counting. While the tour is done, there is still so much work to do. Without your support our epic adventure would have been in vain. RAISING THE ROOF
Documenting the increased barriers to access health services and risk of gender-based violence, early pregnancy and contracting #HIV during the COVID 19 Pandemic in Zimbabwe. #UniteToFight

We were so stoked to be involved in the last minute production of this call to action by The Global Fund in Zimbabwe via Rooftop Productions, during the Covid 19 Pandemic. With less than 2 weeks of planning, endless paperwork and meetings with stakeholders, our team in Zimbabwe pulled of a big win.
When 17-year-old Melissa’s school closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic she was cut off from her studies and had to work to help support her family. Due to school closures and lockdown measures, adolescent girls and young women like Melissa face increased barriers to access health services and are further at risk of gender-based violence, early pregnancy and contracting #HIV. #UniteToFight

A group of friends in Port Elizabeth, RSA decided that they’ll send a different Christmas wish out instead of the usual Xmas card.
Caron Strydom, Heidi Jansen and Dr. Cara Grove ( Livingstone Covid doctor’s song) together with the team from Modyrts Studios recorded this song. It’s a first for this group and with it; we wish you all a safe and blessed Christmas.
Thank you to the incredible kindness from Duncan at ‘The Christmas House Shop’ where all the video footage was taken.
